Machined engineering plastics: lightness, sliding and insulation

Machined engineering plastics complement metals when you need sliding, insulation, chemical resistance or fast prototyping without mould tooling.

POM, polyamide, HDPE, PTFE and PEEK are CNC-machined with suitable parameters (speed, cooling, clamping) to avoid deformation and control dimensional stability.

Lusinage makes guides, rollers, insulators, functional prototypes and small plastic runs, with a possible move to 3D printing for early validation.

Material strengths

Benefits of engineering plastics in CNC machining

Sliding and wear

POM and PA for guides, rails and parts with controlled friction.

Chemical resistance

HDPE and PTFE for aggressive environments or fluid contact.

Insulation and low weight

Dielectric properties and weight savings versus metal for certain components.

Agile prototyping

Rapid iteration without a mould, ideal before industrialisation.

Engineering plastic machining: FAQ

POM or PA6 for a linear guide?

POM for sliding and precision; PA6 for higher mechanical loads; geometry and lubrication to be considered.

Does machined plastic replace the mould?

Yes for prototypes and small runs; moulding becomes competitive at large volumes.

PEEK: machining or 3D printing?

CNC machining for final mechanical properties; 3D for shape validation; we advise according to the stress.

Deformation in plastic machining?

Suitable clamping and cuts limit deformation; leave roughing stock if necessary.

PTFE: is machining possible?

Yes with a specific strategy (low rigidity), for small to medium-sized parts.

Food-grade plastic?

FDA grades possible depending on availability; state food contact on the quote.

What tolerance on a POM part?

Stable if stress-relieved; functional dimensions per drawing with thermal clearance if needed.

Machining or cutting thick HDPE?

CNC machining for holes, notches and complex parts; simple cutting for basic plates.

Metal + plastic combination?

Frequent assemblies; machine separately then assemble at your site or with an integrator.

Files for a plastic quote?

STEP or PDF with the desired grade, quantity and temperature / fluid constraints.
